NIL stands for “Name, Image, and Likeness” and specifically refers to the use of an athlete’s NIL through marketing and promotional endeavors. Student-athletes at NCAA institutions could begin monetizing their NIL beginning on July 1, 2021.
This means student-athletes can cash in on their NIL for activities such as:
- Social media influencing and other promotions
- Personal appearances at businesses, conferences, camps, parties, and other advertising.
- Endorsements of a third-party
- Student-athlete-run camps and private lessons
- Autographs
- Sale of student-athlete owned apparel and personal items
- Student-athlete run businesses
There are rules regarding these agreements at the NCAA, State and college levels. We help businesses and students navigate the rules in partnership with Centre College to help ensure everyone stays compliant and the student-athlete benefits.
General NCAA rules governing NIL deals are as follows:
1.) The student-athlete must do an activity in order to receive compensation (a quid-pro-quo);
2.) That activity cannot be tied to athletic performance or enrollment to Centre College; and
3.) Institutions like Centre College are prohibited from providing compensation for the use of a student-athlete’s NIL.
